Our History
Our story begins in 1981:
Douglas Nelson starts a home improvement company called, Handyman Services and personally did small projects around the homes of his clients. While doing those small projects he spoke with many homeowners about their desire to do more substantial remodeling to the layout and size of their homes.
At this time there were few companies qualified to take on the design and project management these remodeling projects required.
In 1983 the transformation begins:
Doug's vision to provide homeowners with a choice of a reputable company to help them through the process of a major remodel found it's way to reality.
He created a company that focused on additions and major interior remodeling projects. With this change in focus came a new company identity, replacing Handyman Services with Nelson-Johnson Builders, Inc (Johnson is Carol Nelson's maiden name).
In 1986 success brings new identity:
The new company successfully refined the project management and design skills needed to create beautiful "new spaces" for its clients. It was determined that although successful, the company's name did not communicate their focus on remodeling. Nelson-Johnson Builders Inc. then assumed the name, New Spaces.
Today, New Spaces has grown to employ 25 employees and design and build an average of 50 projects per year.
